ABOUT OUR ASSOCIATE TEAM

A Sam-led team. A real system. An honest tier.

Why the Associate Tier Exists

When Sam and Katie started Windy City Production in 2012, every wedding on the calendar was theirs to shoot. As the company grew, demand outpaced what two people could cover — especially during peak Saturday season. The associate tier was built for two reasons, both honest:

For couples, the associate tier offers the full WCP system — the same studio, the same standards, the same Sam-and-Katie editorial oversight on every gallery — at a more accessible price point.

For us, the associate tier keeps the calendar working. Off-peak dates that wouldn't otherwise book, mid-week weddings, Friday and Sunday weddings, and off-season Saturdays all become available to couples who love what we do but want a price point that fits their budget.

Same studio. Same standards. Different price point — that's it.

THE MATH COUPLES DON’T SEE

Chicago metro hosted 43,084 weddings in 2024 — the 5th-largest wedding market in the country. Roughly 75–80% of weddings happen on Saturdays, and Chicago is the 3rd most expensive wedding market in the U.S.

Here's what that means inside the industry: covering a single peak-season Saturday in Chicagoland would require 700 to 1,200 photographers shooting simultaneously — and that's assuming one shooter per wedding. After 14 years in this business, Sam couldn't name 10% of the truly experienced pool — 72 to 120 photographers — off the top of his head.

Demand dwarfs supply.

Couples don't see this part of the market. They see studios advertising rates and assume there's an unlimited pool of equally-experienced shooters at every tier. There isn't. The gap gets filled mostly by shooters working their first or second season — which is exactly why 85% of wedding photographers exit the industry within two years, and 60% in year one alone.

The associate tier exists inside that math. It's not a discount layer bolted onto a premium offering. It's the structural way an established studio extends experienced coverage to dates the founders alone couldn't reach. Every WCP associate is a vetted shooter operating inside our system — not a first-season hire filling a date.

THE SYSTEM

Many of our associates started as interns, shooting side-by-side with Sam and Katie at weddings — not as paid second shooters, but as part of how we develop talent shot-by-shot. Every WCP associate has shot at least 50 weddings inside our system before they're trusted with a solo wedding as the lead.

Sam personally evaluates each associate wedding as it comes in. Every gallery they capture is reviewed by Sam personally and edited under his and Katie's direct oversight — not outsourced, not delegated, not run through a shared editing pipeline. The standard isn't met once and forgotten. It's evaluated wedding by wedding, every time.

That's not a marketing claim. That's the operational reality of how the WCP associate tier works.

HOW A WEDDING GETS ASSIGNED

This is where most studios are unclear. We're going to be specific.

When you book a Sam or Katie package, you're booking them — guaranteed, by name, on your contract. Your wedding day shooter is locked from the moment you book.

When you book an associate package, you're booking a WCP-trained shooter from our team — with all of WCP's standards behind them. Because Sam personally manages the associate calendar and is also actively shooting, it's not unusual for him — or Katie — to be the one who ends up shooting an associate-tier wedding. Not as a substitute for an associate. Because the timing of how dates get booked sometimes works out that way.

If that happens, you get Sam or Katie at the associate rate. But that outcome is never guaranteed in advance, and the only way to guarantee Sam or Katie on your wedding day is to book a Sam or Katie package.

An associate package is a vetted WCP shooter at the associate rate, with an occasional upside. A Sam or Katie package is the guarantee.

THE EDITING

Every Wedding Day Love Story Windy City Production has delivered for the past five years has been overseen by Sam and Katie personally — every gallery, every cinema film, regardless of who shot it. Even as Katie's shooting load has decreased to spend more time with their three children, her hands remain on a huge portion of the editing work. She is, in many ways, the editorial backbone of the studio.

That's not a logistics claim. It's a quality claim. The editing is where a wedding becomes the WCP brand — the color, the pacing, the emotional through-line, the tonal consistency that makes a WCP wedding film recognizable. By keeping editing in-house and overseeing it ourselves, we make sure every wedding we deliver feels like a WCP wedding, regardless of which shooter captured it on the day.

A couple booking an associate-tier wedding gets a gallery edited under the same oversight Sam and Katie apply to their own work. That's the most important part of the system, and it's why the associate tier holds its quality.

THE BLUEPRINT

There's a written agreement between every WCP team member and the studio. We call it the Blueprint Agreement. It commits each associate to the standards of quality and professionalism the studio has held since 2012, and it gives Sam and Katie the authority to act on those standards.

The Blueprint Agreement has been triggered and honored more than once over the years. Every time, we've returned the affected fee to the couple. None of those couples knew the agreement existed. They didn't ask. We chose to.

We don't share the Blueprint as a sales pitch. We share it as proof that the standards we describe to you are the standards we actually enforce — quietly, when nobody's watching.

A STANDARD BEYOND THE AGREEMENT

The Blueprint Agreement holds the team accountable to a clear floor. Sam holds himself accountable to a different standard.

If you've read the About Sam page, you know about the wedding Sam shot the Saturday before his second Ironman in 2024 — hybrid solo, photo and cinema both, with a same-day edit pulled in stolen 10-minute windows during the reception. He drove to Madison for three or four hours of sleep, then ran a 140.6-mile triathlon at sunrise and beat his Year 1 time by 90 minutes.

Here's the part that didn't make the About Sam page.

After the wedding, Sam refunded part of the couple's investment and upgraded their wedding album. The couple hadn't asked for either. Nothing had gone wrong. The day, as the couple experienced it, was a complete success.

But Sam felt the day had been smaller in scope than the Hybrid Package fee reflected, and his standard for what he charges versus what he delivers wouldn't let him keep the full investment. So he didn't.

The phrase that explains this is something Sam has said for years:

"I haven't met a couple who has a higher standard for my work than I personally have."

That standard is not in any contract. It's not in the Blueprint Agreement. It's just how Sam runs the studio, and how he expects the team running under his oversight to operate.

If you book a WCP associate wedding, the system protects you. If something goes wrong, the Blueprint catches it. But the deeper truth is that the people running the system hold themselves to a standard the system doesn't even require. That's the part that's hardest to put into words, and the part that matters most.

THE PRICING

We've kept this page focused on the system, not the numbers, because the system is what makes the associate tier credible. The pricing for both the Sam/Katie tier and the associate tier — including the off-peak Saturday rate — is on its own page.
